Theresa Michels RN was fired from Great River Medical Center in Iowas for several major problems under her care.  She applied for unemployment benefit and was denied after appeal by an administrative law judge.

Great Britain still has not solved its physician problem.  The hospital physician are going on another one day strike for better pay and conditions.  There will be continued strikes over the next several months.  Neither side will budge and it is only the public who suffers.        Top

The Mayo Clinic will begin charging for MyChart messages in order to slow the amount of messaging.  The up to $50 charge will apply to any message that requires a diagnosis or a clinical decision.

Allina Health has a real problem.  Over 550 of their employed physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants have filed to unionize.  This is due to their perceived and probably rightly seen decreased staffing.

California is paying for hospitals to be either inefficient or to delay fiscal insolvency.  They are giving $300 million in interest free loans to several hospitals.  Madera Community Hospital has been closed for nine months will get $51 million.  The hospital is now owned by Adventist, a company not noted for charitable work.  They hope to reopen the hospital.  Beverly Hospital in the Los Angeles area will get $5 million.  The hospital is also being purchase or managed by Adventist.  Hazel Hawkins Hospital near Monterey will get $10 million and is in bankruptcy. Other hospitals receiving money are TriCity Medical Center in san Diego $33.2 million; Kaweah Delta Health in Visalia $20.8 million; El Centro Regional in Imperial County $28 million; Pioneer Memorial in Imperial County $28 million; Dameron Hospital in Stockton $29 million ( now managed by Adventist).

Another wonderful hospital system PeaceHealth is shuttering the only hospital in Eugene, Oregon, the home to the University of Oregon.  The outpatient services will remain open.  This closure comes one week after the new nursing contract was ratified.

PeaceHealth competitor Providence has reported an operating loss of $202 million for the second quarter of 2023.  Last year they lost $20 million more.  Do not cry for them as the first six months netted an operating revenue of up from $12.7 Billion the year prior to $14 Billion this year.

Methodist Hospital Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, is being criticized for taking on a liver transplant on a young man who was an alcoholic.  The patient had a very rocky course and died.  No other hospital would do the transplant.  Is it better to try and fail or to not do at all?

Optum, the largest medical employer in the country, is laying off all the nurses at over 100 clinics.  They will be replaced by ???.        Top

Physicians

The American Board of Internal Medicine is still under fire for their poorly run MOC program.  Now 15,000 physicians have signed a petition to eliminate the poorly designed and administered program.

Proliance Surgeons has lost a seven physician OB Group, a six physician OB Group, a 7 physician surgical group, and a 22 physician otho group all of the Pacific Northwest.

The family of a Japanese resident physician killed himself says this was due to the huge amount of overtime he was required and did work.  He worked over 200 overtime hours in the month prior to his death.    The place where he worked said we didn't do it, he did it on his own.         Top
