Sias v Mahmoud

Dr. Ammar Mahmoud, a New York City plastic surgeon, has been sued by a former patient for beating her and assault, battery and turning her into his sex slave.  This article was written by the NY Post.  The suit also alleges that he has done this to others and this is also echoed in a suit by his ex-wife.  The former model girl friend now laments that she can not now claim that she is all natural since she claims the doctor injected a filler in her orbital area.

US v Werschler

Dr. William Werschler of Spokane, Washington, was indicted for taking Covid relief monies and using them on personal items.  He had received about $2.9 million in relief money.

US v Quraishi
Convicted

A federal jury convicted Dr. Sadeq Quraishi, a former anesthesiologist at Tufts Medical Center, of sex trafficking a child.  He answered an online ad for sex with an underage girl.  the ad was a come-on by the feds.  

Massachusetts v Chin
Sentenced

Glenn Chin, a pharmacist, had plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter for his role in causing meningitis due to compounding meds being contaminated.  This led to 11 deaths in Michigan and now will cost him 7 1/2 to 15 years of his life in prison.

Pediatrician Dr. Brian Aalbers of Kansas City, Missouri, plead guilty of using a concealed video camera to secretly record 13 children to produce child porn.

Indicted

Dr. Kynan Brown of Bloomington, Illinois, was indicted of sexual acts with a minor.  

Michigan v Aejaz
Indicted

Dr. Oumair Aejaz, who is currently in jail on a bond for allegedly secretly taped women and children and taped a sexual assault that he allegedly did on an unconscious patient, has now been hit with 17 more accusations of molesting a 6 year old.

Colorado v Mathews
Sentenced

Dr. Stephen Mathews, a Denver cardiologist, was sentenced to 158 years in prison for drugging and raping women.  He was convicted several months ago of the charges by a jury.  

US v Sahni
Sentenced

Dr. Harsha Sahni of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, had been suspended from the practice of medicine and had plead guilty of illegally harboring two women from India and forcing them to work for her, has been sentenced to two years in prison.  She lied to the women and told them they would be deported if they went to the police.

Dr. Bradford Ferrick and his father David Ferrick of Winchester, Massachusetts, have been indicted on charges of child porn with endangerment.        Top

US v Bryn Medical Center
Settlement

The Chattanooga, Tennessee, clinic agreed to pay $1,148,598 to settle allegations that it knowingly billed Medicare for electro-acupuncture using auricular stimulation.  The code used to bill was for implantable neurostimulators which this was not.

California v Aldairi, Attar, Krikorian, Narin, Alani, Shammas
Indicted

Husam Aldairi, DDS of San Diego along with five of his employees have been indicted for defrauding Medicaid of $900,000.  The indictment claims that the office fraudulently billed patients for services not rendered.

US v Mokbel
Convicted

A federal jury convicted Mohamad Mokel, the head of 4M Pharmaceuticals, of illegally purchasing patient information of thusands of Medicare beneficiaries and billed for items never received.

California v Tantuwaya, Fish
Indicted

Dr. Vrijesh Tantuwaya, a San Diego neurosurgeon, along with David Fish, a consultant, have been indicted for runing a worker compensation scam.

US v Teva Pharmaceuticals
Settlement

The company agreed to pay $450 million over six years to settle allegations that it violated the Anti-Kickback Statute.  This is for allegedly paying patient's co-pays along with raining the price of the drug Copaxone along with conspiring with others to fix prices of pravastatin, clotrimazole and tobramycin.  

US v Aslam
Indicted

Dr. Naveed Aslam of West Bloomfield, Michigan, was indicted for fraud.  It is alleged that he bought and sold cancer drugs for profit  He is alleged that through is oncology practice he purchased the meds and resold them to customers.

Settlement

Dr. Janette Gray and her medical practice, The Center for Health and Wellness, both of San Diego, agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle allegations that she billed fed med for services not covered in her holistic practice.  She is alo kicked out of fed med for five years.

US v Sokalsky
Sentenced

Dr. Brian Solkalsky of Margate, New Jersey, was sentenced to just over one year in prison for writing prescriptions for compound meds for kickbacks.  He also must repay over $5 million in restitution.        Top

The administration from HHS on minimum staffing in ursing homes required a RN 24/7 and total nurse staffing of 3 1/2 hour per resident per day.  The rule was challenged to prevent the closures of multiple nursing homes that could or would not comply with the new rule.

Providers v Blue Cross Blue Shield
Settlement

The insurer has agreed to pay $2.8 Billion to settle a case that alleged antitrust for dividing markets to avoid competing with one another.  Along with the money they agreed to implement operational changes across 16 categories.  These changes will hopefully alleviate administrative burdens and inefficiencies by providers.  This still needs court approval.

St. Charles Surgical Hospital and Center for Restorative Breast Surgery v Blue Cross / Blue Shield
Verdict

The Louisiana surgical center won a verdict against the insurer for $421 million over the not fully paying for out of network charges.  This will be appealed.  

Texas v Granados
Indicted

Pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Hector Granado has been indicted for providing puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy to children which is against Texas law.  He was also accused of intentionally falsifying medical records along with [prescruiption and billing records.  This is the second doctor the state AG has indicted for this in two weeks.         Top

Doe v Universal Health Services
Judge Verdict

A jury had awarded Doe, a 13 year old boy and his mother, $60 million in compensatory damages and $475 million in punitive damages.  The defendant filed post verdict motions and the judge reduced the punitive damages to $120 million.  He did not reduce the compensatory damage reward.  The damages will be appealed by UHS.

Patients v Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Brock
Filed

So far 35 women have filed suit against the hospital and Dr, Barry Brock, an OB/GYN for sexual and medical misconduct along with the clinics in which he worked concealing the problems.  It accuses Dr. Brock of making lewd comments to patients, doing medically unnecessary medical exams of their breasts and genitals and giving women unneeded sutures causing genital mutilation.  

Schwartz v Sprengelmeyer
Verdict

Schwartz had surgery at the University of Iowa to insert hardware in his spine for stabilization.  He was discharged to Cedar Manor in Tipton, Iowa under the care of Dr. Michelle Sprengelmeyer.  The patient developed an infection and died.  The suit claims that Dr. Sprengelmeyer did not follow the directions from the University regarding continuing antibiotics.   Sprengelmeyer was ordered to pay $1.645 million.        Top
