Texas v Ortiz, Jr.
Convicted

Dr. Raynaldo Otiz, Jr., an anesthesiologist at Baylor Scott and White, was convicted of tampering with consumer products causing serious bodily injury.  He was facing disciplinary charges at the hospital for an alleged medical error and had his license suspended by the Texas Medical association.  He was convicted of causing at least 10 patients losing their blood pressure in the OR due his injecting the IV solutions.        Top

US v Siefort, Ehn
Sentenced

Dr. Timothy Ehn of Union, Kentucky, the owner of a chiropractic pain clinic was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay over $3 million in restitution after being convicted of fraud for ordering expensive tests done on their own machine that were medically unnecessary.  Dr. William Siefert of Dayton, Ohio, was convicted for the same crime and sent to prison for 18 months and ordered to pay almost $2 million.  

US v Gupta
Convicted

Dr. Adarsh Gupta of Sewell, New Jersey, was convicted by a jury of fraud.  He was accused of ordering othotic braces via telemarketing without examining patients.  The braces were not needed.        Top

California Hospital Association v Anthem Blue Cross

The CHA is getting tired of member hospitals not being paid for their services.  They are targeting the insurer due to Anthem not authorizing timely discharge to post acute care.  This is causing patients to stay in the hospital longer and not being paid for the care.  They are requesting an injunction to force the insurer to pay for the unneeded inpatient care that they are causing.  California has no law stating how quickly insurers need to authorize post hospital care.        Top
