The ABMS has denied the American College of Cardiology to have an independent board for their own specialty.  They wanted this to get away from the problems with the ABIM board.  Cardiology will continue to explore options including legal ones to drop the ABIM.

Jefferson Health of Philadelphia has broken with Cigna Health Plans.  They say they payments are too low and they will continue to negotiate.        Top

Joseph Webb, the CEO of Nashville General Hospital has resigned after the Metropolitan Authority Board investigated potential fraud , wasteful spending and policy violations at the hospital.  Prior to the firing Webb has announced he would not seek a renewal of his contract. 

The physician-nurse strike against Providence St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon has ended after 46 days.  The hospitalists voted to accept their contract but went on strike in solidarity with their nurses anyway.  The physicians received no pay while on strike even though limited hardship funds were available.          Top

The Montana Medical Board has renewed the medical license of Dr. Thomas Weiner.  Dr. Weiner was fired from St. Peter's Hospital due to allegation and publicly accusing him of harming patients by over prescribing narcotics and giving chemotherapy to patients who did not need it.  Dr. Weiner has sued the hospital for wrongful termination and defamation.  The state Supreme Court has ruled that the peer review process used was "reasonable and warranted due to the quantity and severity of Weiner's inappropriate care."  Dr. Weiner is now under an inquiry for criminal behavior by the state and has been sued by the feds for potential fraud.  Weiner has asked the federal court to dismiss those charges.        Top
