Researchers at NCI believe that screening for lung cancer using CT scans would be more beneficial using an individual's risk than the USPSTF's criteria limited to heavy and current smoking.  How unusual the the feds task force missed another one.

The American College of Radiology has listed its appropriateness criteria for radiological tests.  This will be used as the national standard for payments.

The lobby America's Health Plans has become much less relevant.  They have lost Aetna and United in the past and now Humana has left the fold.

The Senate Dems have a short memory.  They are questioning the legality of the new Trump rule allowing but not mandating work requirements for Medicaid.  Under Clinton the same rule applied, but it was a different time.

British hospitals are postponing elective surgery and routine appointments until February due to the expected huge increase in flu cases.  Apparently, they are not able to care for both at the same time.  This is a NHS advisory and only looks at putting a band aid on a problem and not fixing the underlying problem which will cost money.

Those that long for the progressive idea of government run healthcare should take heed to the British NHS.  Some of the cancer hospitals are now rationing chemo due to a shortage of nurses.          Top

The physicians at Roseberg, Oregon VA hospital are complaining that the hospital administration is deliberately limiting the number of patients in order to get higher ratings.  With fewer patients the chances for errors decrease.  The administrator said that the hospital just could not take care of the sick patients so they were sent to community hospitals.  The ED physicians wrote a rebuttal to the administrator and all were published in the NYT.  

Four hospital systems encompassing about 300 hospitals have banded together to form a company to make and distribute generic drugs.  This is to directly challenge those scavengers who buy up off patent drugs and raise prices, think Colchicine, Doxycycline and Daraprim.  They will initially market these to hospitals but may go after the larger market.        Top

Physicians

Dr. Harvey Makadon resigned from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston after he was accused by several males of sexual harassment.  He had previously resigned under duress from Fenway Community Health Center.  He was a worker in the Gay community.

Medscape reports that about 1/3 of physicians state they are facing burnout.  They are less engaged with patients and are less friendly.  They also acknowledge that depression will cause mistakes they would not make otherwise.  The more acute the work conditions the more the burnout.        Top
