The new Democratic super super majority legislature of California is planning to pass a law that would allow adult illegal immigrants to get Medicaid.  There are about 1.8 that would qualify.  California has a budget surplus now but that could quickly eat it up.

New Zealand has passed a law legalizing medical marijuana. Terminal patients can start smoking pot immediately but others will have to wait until the rules are set, possibly one year.  There will be a national referendum on recreational pot sometime in the not too distant future.          Top

Hospitals

It's about time!  TJC has issued an sentinel event alert regarding the lack of hospital leaders giving a thank you to those who report safety concerns.  The latest alert mandates not only a review of the problem reported but also a closure of the loop, making sure the reporter knows how the problem was fixed.  This is to be in a non-confronting manner, an enigma to administrators and competitors.            Top

Malpractice

The Governor of Puerto Rico has signed a law that would require medical panels to review malpractice claims.  All plaintiffs except indigent ones would be required to make a bond payment to the panel.  If the panel determines there is malpractice the money would be returned.  Of the 1000 medical malpractice cases files per year in the territory about 900 are dismissed.        Top

Physicians

The California Medical Board will start to monitor FDA letters sent to physicians licensed by the state.  This goes along with data mining death records to find physicians who over prescribe meds.        Top
