Medicare Advantage insurers have been the first to get the green light to negotiate with drugmakers on price. This is the first step in the reduction of cost to the fed med programs. This will increase competition but will have some rules attached. Patients will have to do step therapy; use a cheaper drug first and then the more expensive one. If drug companies do not want people to try the new cheaper drugs of other manufacturers they will need to reduce their own cost to purchase the meds. This will only be for new prescriptions not for people who already use the drug. Plans will be required to pass on at least half the savings to the patients by the use of gift cars or other rewards.
