CalPERS has asked and received permission from California's Department of Managed Health Care to allow Blue Shield to delete 13 Sutter hospitals in the state, 24 in all. This includes four hospitals in the Sacramento area. The total amount of people affected who will need new physicians is 55,000. Initially CalPERS had cut 38 hospitals but had later come to agreements with 14, who agreed to lower their charges. Top In a strange turn of events, the trial lawyers are going after the Connecticut insurance commissioner to look at the proposed 90% increase in malpractice premiums proposed by Indiana's GE Medical Protective. Could it be that if it goes through the trial lawyers will lose any hold on the legislature over tort reform? Top As I wrote in one of my last updates, the Joint is losing money in their accreditation business. They are now planning to increase charges for their poor accreditation process starting in 2005. In a CEO opinion survey, the Joint has come out smelling poorly. They have lost ground in all questions asked regarding their processes. The worst of all were the lack of the Joint in engaging the physicians in the process. Top In Gary, Indiana, the medical director or the Methodist Hospital has been accused by the Attorney General as being unfit to practice medicine. Dr. Michael Linton has been accused of not providing adequate care to pregnant women, especially those at high risk. The hospital responded that the charges by the Attorney General are slanderous.
