A recent article talks about a new trend in both the hospital and outpatient settings, the use of a virtual scribe.  The physician uses the mike in the computer and the person on the other end listens and scribes the salient points of the conversation.  Of course, others have scribes walk with them to see patients and are present in the room for the encounter.  Some of the virtual scribes aare in India and other countries but records are stored in the US and are supposedly HIPAA compliant.        Top

Seleem Choudhury, the CEO of Porter Medical Center who was targeted fo plagiarizing as detailed in the last newsletter ha now resigned.

CMS is now investigating Newark Beth Israel after ProPublica broke the story that the hospital kept a patient alive and did not give the family all their choices in order to keep their transplant program from being terminated.  They had a worry that if one of their 38 patient died before their one year anniversary of a heart transplant that they may lose their ability to do the procedures.  

The Naval Medical Center Portsmouth opened without enough physicians because they failed to hire enough civilian physicians.  There were new contracts and the physicians did not sign them.  

Ohio Valley Medical Center closed and with it went 34 resident slots.  All have secured other positions.

The Atlanta VA has reduced surgeries to emergencies only due to shortages of equipment and staff not showing up on time for the cases requiring cancellations.  They are sending out patients to other hospitals for routine surgery.          Top

Physicians

California physicians are now being sued not only for med mal but medical battery as well o attempt to get around the $250,000 cap on non-economic damages.  One physician actually got caught in this and his verdict is being appealed so that the plaintiff will see no money at all for many years until the state Supreme Court reviews the case.          Top
